July 2011, I approached Marie with an idea of starting a women's refugee art group in collaboration with her all ready in gear women's group. This art group would meet every other week in the lovely basement of a Roger's Park church. Marie would bring the women. I would bring the art ideas and supplies.
Now fast forward, and we now have had women come back week after week to do different art projects. Usually 5-10 refugee women come, many are each others mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins. I never tell the women what they will be making the next week. They like the surprise and look on with excitement as I spread the art examples and materials on the table.
Many times we don't have an interpreter. We make due and since the women are learning more and more English it gets easy for projects to be explained. When creating their work, we talk, we laugh, and we ultimately make some pretty great things!
